The gear checklist for your first fishing trip
The biggest mistake beginners make is buying everything possible on day one. The truth is a small, well-chosen list is enough to start right — you add to it once you know your preferred style.
Non-negotiable basics
- A mid-range rod and reel: a standard 2.4–3m spinning shore rod covers most shore fishing. No need for a specialized rod on day one.
- Main line: PE 1–2 or 0.30–0.35mm nylon covers most small and medium fish.
- An assortment of hooks: various sizes from 4 to 8/0 depending on target fish.
- An assortment of weights: from 20g to 100g, depending on current strength and casting distance.
- Line scissors and small pliers: to safely unhook a fish.
Basic safety gear (even for shore)
- A hat and sun protection — most fishing trips happen in strong sun.
- Enough drinking water — being next to water isn't a substitute for drinking it.
- Proper footwear for slippery rocks if fishing off rocks.
- A basic first-aid kit, especially for accidental hook snags.
Nice to have, not essential on day one
- An organized tackle bag — convenient later, not required for your first trip.
- A small scale and measuring tape — useful if you'll submit to "Biggest catch."
- A bucket with aeration if you'll use live bait.
One last tip
Match your gear to where you'll actually fish — check the "Rigs & knots" tab for your spot in the tool before you buy, so you get exactly what you need the first time instead of buying and discovering it doesn't fit.
